Väderötrafiken’s M/S Nanny with her silhouette of life rafts mounted on a frame on top of the wheelhouse is a well-known feature in Torekov. The charming wooden fishing vessel has sneaked into our hearts. This year she is turning 100!
In spite of her century-long service she has not sailed all the seven seas, but has had a number of owners on the Swedish West Coast and changed names several times. She was built for fishing as well as freight trade, but eventually used solely for freight trade.
Various sources give slightly different information about the history of M/S Nanny. Her keel was laid down in 1919 at Klippans varv, a shipyard in Gothenburg. First she was named M/S Jan Alrik and belonged to a jointly owned shipping company, Jan Alrik, in Skärhamn 1919-1922. Then between 1922 – and 1975 her name was Nanny with owners in Skärhamn and Gullholmen.
Nanny came to Torekov in 1975, purchased by Anders I. Kullenberg. In 1978 – 1987 she belonged to the same shipping company, but now under the name of Nannie. This happened when Onstadsrederierna were producing a supertanker at the shipyard in Uddevalla. The shipping company had a history of ships called Nanny in their fleet and wanted another one. The problem was solved by a minor spelling change. In 1987 – 1990 she sailed between Torekov and Väderön, now as Väderön 2. When af Torekov was added in 1990 she became Nanny again. The supertanker had no longer Swedish owners, but in the meantime another ship registered as Nanny had appeared!
Since 2015 Nanny af Torekov belongs to Torekov Shipping AB, operating under the name of Väderötrafiken. In accordance with tradition she ferries passengers from Torekov to Väderön and back.
-Nanny is the last maritime heritage still in service in the fishing village of Torekov. We do our utmost to keep her alive for coming generations, says Nils Möller at Väderötrafiken.
This summer she is decorated with a new, beautiful row of bunting. Her 100th anniversary is celebrated through the whole season. On 4 August there will be extra focus on Nanny af Torekov, though. After a combined seal safari and guided Väderö walk the participants of the tour will reachSandhamn and the Nanny centennial celebrations.
Torekov Tourist Information Centre and the café at Sandhamn sell a boat-shaped Nanny sweet, specially produced for the anniversary year 2019. Specially produced for M/S Nanny in our hearts.
